Gundega Šmite was born in Riga, Latvia. She has graduated from Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in the composition department with professor Pēteris Plakidis (2007). In the 2005/2006 academic year she supplemented her education with studies at the Jean Sibelius Academy of Music (Finland) with Veli-Matti Puumala. She has taken participation in Centre Acanthes workshop, having masterclasses with Salvatore Sciarrino and Fabio Nieder (2008) and Philipe Hurel, Oskar Strasnoy and Unsuk Chin (2011). Since 2007 she has been a lecturer at the Latvian Music Academy. From 2009 till 2012 she held a Chairman's position at the Latvian Composers’ Union. From 2009 till 2011 she has been an artistic director of the Contemporary Music festival Arena as well from 2010 till 2012 – an artistic director of the festival Latvian New Music Days. At 2013 she earned a doctoral degree in arts from the Latvian Music Academy for her musicological research, that concerns various aspects of music and text relationship in the contemporary choral music. Currently she is based in Thessaloniki, Greece, developing her postdoctoral research at the Aristotle University. She has won numerous prices and recognitions for her work; her works have have been performed in prominent Contemporary music festivals Klangspuren, Time of Music, Baltic Sea Festival, Sounds New among others, as well as in public concerts worldwide.
