GRENZKONTROLLE ("border control") is a German NDW/New Wave/Post Punk band from Cologne. In 2020, a then 22-year-old quoted the words of his role model Fred Hampton in an agitated voice: "We don't think you fight fire with fire best." The whole thing took place at a Black Lives Matter demonstration on Berlin's Alexanderplatz. In 2025, Gaspár Ali, now 27, stood in front of a postcard-style castle and shouted, "I can only respond to hate with hate." It was the debut song "REVOLUTION" by the punk band GRENZKONTROLLE, whose singer is Don L. Gaspár Ali. What has happened in the years since 2020 that has changed his attitude from the words of civil rights activist Fred Hampton to those very words? Anyone who seriously expects an answer to this must have been in a coma, or has been blinded by innate privilege to the dramatic social, climatic, and political upheavals. GRENZKONTROLLE are the furious four-person collective we need right now! Lyrics about unaffordable housing, somewhere between Fehlfarben, Neue Deutsche Welle, and the rage of US rap. Members: Vocals, Guitar: Don L. Gaspár Ali Guitar: Tybalt Bischoff Drums: Lara Melissa Roth Ex members: Bass: Klaus Bouwer (Until September 2019) https://www.instagram.com/diegrenzkontrolle/ User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
