Artist
Composer and teacher, born 16th July 1947 in Wroclaw. Pstrokonska-Nawratil studied composition at the State School of Music in Wroclaw, first (1966-7) under Stefan Poradowski, then in the class of Tadeusz Natanson (1967-71). She continued her composition studies in France under Pierre Boulez and Olivier Messiaen, participated in courses of the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris, at a seminar on Iannis Xenakis's music in Aix-en-Provence, and was a trainee at the experimental studios of Paris and Marseille. She has worked at the State School of Music in Wroclaw since 1971 (as Professor since 1993) and is Head of the Chair of Composition and Theory of Music. Since 1998 she has also taught at the Poznan Academy of Music. Pstrokonska-Nawratil is a winner of a number of composition competitions, including THE TADEUSZ BAIRD YOUNG COMPETITION OF THE UNION OF POLISH COMPOSERS (1968 and 1973), GRZEGORZ FITELBERG COMPETITION (1972), INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR WOMEN COMPOSERS in Mannheim (1975). Her 1979 work IKAR for symphony orchestra won the 3rd place at the UNESCO INTERNATIONAL COMPOSERS' TRIBUNE in Paris in 1987. She received the Wroclaw City Award and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers Award for work for children and teenagers in 1997 and the Brother Albert Award in 1998.
