Born in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Glass Oaks consists of four members all committed to the creation of quality and heartfelt music. Jon Smalt (drums) Ben Anspach (lead guitar) and Taylor Thompson (bass) were a unit tied together by their love of instrumental craftsmanship and bold experimentation. The trio lived and traveled together, planning to work as a backing band for different singer/songwriters in the area. Joel Kaiser (vocals, rhythm guitar) in the meantime was an already established front-man in desperate need of a band. The four played a few shows together and quickly realized that their musical synergy was undeniable. Though the collaboration began as a marriage of convenience, it grew into a relationship bonded by shared passions and, at times, opposing but complementary inspirations. Initially, the band performed Kaiser’s songs, but after writing the song, “Pray” together, they became increasingly eager for collective songwriting. In March 2013 the group recorded a live video of “Middle of it,” one of their most popular songs. The live basement recording caught the attention of local Newspapers, radio stations, and music venues, and the band became a local sensation. Around this time, they began to think seriously about committing to a band name. Inspired by J.D. Salinger’s series of short stories about the Glass family, Glass Oaks was the only one that stuck.
