Giuseppe Moneta (Florence, 1754 - Florence, September 17, 1806) was an Italian composer. Nothing is known about Moneta's musical formation and little is known about his youth and his early musical activities: it is known that he composed, before 1779, a farce with an unknown title. From this year onwards his compositional career proceeded regularly until the end of the century: on February 20 in San Giovannino degli Scolopi he represented his first oratory , The prodigal son , and on June 1 it was the turn of his first comic opera , the playful drama The Shepherds of the Alps , given at the Borgo Ognissanti Theater. On 9 September in the same stage Moneta conducted Il tamburo nocturne by Giovanni Paisiello on the harpsichord . Over the next 20 years he composed several operas, mainly interludes and melodramas , as well as sacred works and instrumental music. Thanks to the successes obtained, in 1791, he was appointed honorary chapel master of the Tuscan grand ducal court and later also director of the chapel of the court of Parma. Several dramatic compositions, cantatas and melodramas (lyrical tragedies), by Moneta were destined for the celebrations of the Tuscan court, among these we remember the cantata L'Urano , written to celebrate the wedding of Francis II of Habsburg-Lorraine in 1788.
