about

Giovanni Battista Ala (Monza , 16th century - perhaps 1612) was an Italian organist and composer who lived in Lombardy between the second half of the 16th century and the early years of the 17th century. He practiced as an organist at the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi. According to various personal and bibliographic sources, Giovanni Battista Ala was born in Monza in the second half of the 16th century. His death took him very young: at the age of 32, he seems to have died. According to Gerber, his death date is 1612; however, the works composed by the author were published in the years following his death (they belong to the time span from 1617 to 1634). From an analysis carried out on the various compositions of the author, it emerged that he composed following a monodic and concertante style, new for the time.
