Since the closing years of schooling, Michael Scalzo and James Becker have found a mutual appreciation for melodically strong and layered lo-fi sounds, dip dyed in phasered charm. While meandering through the corridors of James’ exceptionally large Melbourne house, attempting to expel their creative spirit in more ways than wine and cigarettes, some recording of music eventuated in James’ bedroom; albeit in-between ritualistic animistic coffee making ceremonies and backyard cricket. Their sound evolved to represent these escapades of escapism and nonchalance. This duo’s alter ego has now proudly produced their third collection of music to date, Fi.Fi.Fo.Funk. These 8 tracks of jangle – pop and whimsical psychedelica are guitar driven brain explosions served headstrong with swaying riffs and expansive fusion-like envelopes of sound that may pick you up and put you on that white horse galloping towards the gold pot at the end of the rainbow. The band approach their music with a sometimes quirky charisma producing a diverse album spanning topics from living inside a bonsai tree to the stupid idealism of drug exploration with one’s mother. Gilligan Smiles wish they were soulful, devastatingly overstated band loving tragics, but other things have got the better of them – so here is an album simplifying their best attempts at being exactly that.
