Gideon Lewensohn, a fifth generation Jerusalemite was born in 1954. Lewensohn studied composition and bass at the Rubin Academy in Tel-Aviv where he graduated in 1988 with an Artist Diploma Cum Laude. He later continued for his Doctoral studies in conducting at the Peabody conservatory in Baltimore USA. Upon his return to Israel in 1995 he began to teach at the music department at Bar Ilan University where he founded the graduate program for composition. In addition to his University teaching he is active as composer, Bass player and conductor. In terms of style he is not commited to any particular school though he feels that his contact with the hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag had a profound impact on his music. Most of his works are for small ensembles so that he may compose in a way that alowes every performer a vital expression within the piece. In recent years he has been working with electroacoustic materials and is especially interested in the integration of live performance and electro acoustic music. This past winter he premiered his Serenade Nocturnale for Bass and electroacoustic sounds at the New Music Biennale in Tel Aviv and is now completing a string quartet for the Auer quartet in Budapest. Gideon Lewensohn is a member of the Franz Kafka Ensemble which a new contemporary music group of four composers-performers which integrates computer and instrumental music with theatrical elements.
