Artist
Formed in the early 90's by front-man Dren McDonald, this eclectic Gypsy Folk Punk ensemble featured a wide variety of instrumentation such as Guitar, Banjo, Accordion, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Clarinet, Violin, Stand-up Bass/Viola/Cello (plucked and bowed) and of course percussion. To imagine their sound, think 'What if the Pogues were Hungarian gypsies?' or 'What if Tom Waits played Klezmer music on acid?'. McDonalds rich, gravelly (yet warm) voice juxtaposed with the sometimes moody, sometimes joyful (but always theatrical) instrumentals evoke a distant time and place. The songs are often about quirky, down-and-out characters, angst, rejection and (occasionally) redemption. Wiemar cabaret orchestra? Or demented circus band? You decide. Influences/similar artist include; Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, The Pogues, Gogol Bordello, Rube Waddell, Dresden Dolls, Frank Pahl, Jason Webley.
