Artist
Ghost in the Canyon is the stage and recording name of dream folk singer and songwriter Catherine Rose Smith (born Stanford, CA, United States, 14 July 1992). She currently splits time between Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA. The name Ghost in the Canyon is inspired by a lyrics from the song "Shivering Faun" by the Fruit Bats. She has released the EP "Morning", recorded at San Francisco's famous Studio Trilogy, as well as several albums of self-produced material. Smith was raised near Palo Alto, California, United States where her parents researched and taught neurophysiology at Stanford University. From an early age she danced ballet and performed in musicals, but after learning to play the guitar at age 16, her interest turned to music and songwriting. Her repertoire of instruments expanded to include piano, mandolin, and harp. Ghost in the Canyon released the debut EP "Morning" in January of 2013. Recorded at Studio Trilogy in San Francisco, the EP featured Shane Fogerty (lead guitar), Caitlin Notey (background vocals), Brandon Woodward (drums), Taylor Hopkins (bass), and Scott Heiner (percussion), in addition to Catherine Rose Smith herself on lead vocals and acoustic guitar. Her music has been compared, variously, to that of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, and Fleetwood Mac.
