Gholam Ali Poor Atayi (Persian: غلامعلی پورعطایی) was born in 1948 in Torbat-e Jam, Khorasan, Iran. He himself says that he started to learn dotar and singing from his mother when he was 8 or 9 and became familiar with poets from Hafiz, Sa’di, Ferdowsi, Abdolrahman Jami and also folklore poems. He continued learning singing from Molla Shahab-edin Shirmohammadi, Yousef Khan Teymouri, Abdolhamid Ayoub Khan and Mansour Batouri and also Dotar from Zolfaghar Asgaryian. He became a teacher in Zourabad (today Salehabad) when he was 18 and met Maestro Adham Sheikhi there. In the same year he was invited to Tehran to perform in places like Roudaki Hall and recorded some tapes which became very popular.
