Artist
Georgs Pelēcis is a Latvian composer and musicologist, born in Riga in 1947. He graduated from Aram Khachaturjan’s composition class of the P.I.Tschaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow in 1970, was ingaged in post graduate research until 1977, received the degree of doctor of art in 1981 and doctor habil. art. in 1990. His “A Study Of Palestrina Style” is marked by the International Palestrina Center in Rome (1993). For some time Pelēcis studied at the Universities of Oxford (1995, Corpus Christi College) and Cambridge (1997, Gonville and Caius College). His music for Roald Dahl’s “Jack And The Beanstalk” has had the world-premiere in the Royal Albert Hall (London). Since 1990 Georgs Pelēcis is professor of the Latvian Academy of Music; he teaches theory and history of counterpoint and fugue. The musical tonality of the composer seems to reflect an amazingly clear positive spirit. This very quality, whose genetic ancestry can be found partly in Renaissance and Baroque music and partly in the minimalist aesthetic, infuses composer’s creative output with spiritual strength and brings previously unknown fresh and pulsating activity to Latvian music. Of all the stylistic categorisations which the composer himself and musical critics have given to his works, the most precise would be “new consonant music”.
