Artist
I Gede Manik was a great Balinese artist, renowned as both a master drummer and the first dancer of the Tari Kebyar Legong. At one point, he revealed his true identity as a creative innovator. Drawing inspiration from the Kebyar Legong dance he often performed, he conceived a new version that was shorter in duration but retained its dynamic and expressive qualities. This dance, originally known simply as Kebyar Dangin Enjung, embodied the heroic spirit of youth. In 1950, when it was performed before President Soekarno and his guests at a hotel in Denpasar, the president—an avid admirer of the arts—was deeply impressed by the powerful, energetic performance and the thunderous accompaniment of the gamelan orchestra. Soekarno then gave the piece its enduring name: Tarunajaya, meaning “the victorious youth.” Beyond dance, I Gede Manik was also highly skilled and expressive as a kendang (drum) player, with artistic experiences extending beyond Indonesia. Unfortunately, despite his enormous cultural contributions, his descendants have lived with limited recognition and support. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPzQnIhO87s User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
