Gazelle Amber Valentine is an American musician, singer and songwriter from the United States best known for her work in the pioneering sludge metal duo Jucifer. She developed a groundbreaking guitar sound, achieved in part by unique methods she devised for tuning and amplification. Her playing style, which encompasses frequencies and structural duties of rhythm, lead and bass guitars with a single instrument, has been influential for the better part of two decades. Her technique, however, has not been accurately imitated despite profiles in magazines such as Guitar Player. In context of Jucifer, Valentine eschews many standard approaches to her instrument as well as to music composition. She learned to read music as a child, but developed her own form of notation and employs the latter when writing. Jucifer is known both as an overwhelmingly loud, heavy live band and as a disconcertingly unpredictable studio entity. Both members have displayed a capacity for composing songs within a variety of genres unusual for one band to attempt, and for successfully tying such disparate sounds into conceptual pieces (most notably their 2008 double album L'Autrichienne). Critics have praised Valentine for her vocal flexibility. She is a mezzo soprano with a wide and expressive tonal range, using her voice at various volume levels for melody as well as for screaming, whispering and growling. Though not a coloratura, she has the ability to shift abruptly from one voice to another. In add
