Gawaher - whose name translates to "jewel" - is an Egyptian popstar of Nubian-Sudanese origin. She was born in Sudan, but when she was 7 years old her family moved to Cairo, Egypt. She was discovered by the Nubian singer Ali Hassan Kuban, and has since released many records. Many consider her song "Ana Laka" as her greatest hit. Her musical style is a blend of an Egyptian street style music called sha'abi, which is heavily influenced by pop and soul music, and Ethiopian, Sudanese, and Nubian rhythms. This has garnered her popularity both throughout the Arab world and elsewhere Gawaher makes frequent appearances at world music festivals around the world.
