Free Range Rat is composed of uniformly strong players: John Carlson (trumpet and flugelhorn), Eric Hipp (tenor sax), Shawn McGloin (bass), and George Schuller (drums and percussion), sometimes with special guest Douglas Yates (clarinets). Free Range Rat plays what they call "cosmosonic jazz", paying homage to those rich traditions of improvisational music including conceptual nods to Sun Ra, James Blood Ulmer, Bob Marley, Ornette Coleman, Parliament Funkadelic as well as new works from members of the band.
