Started in earnest in 2019 as a drone/ambient side project for Alcove guitarist Matt Hurley. With Alcoves diminished activity post pandemic and eventual indefinite hiatus, it eventually became Hurleys primary project. Initially a more purely soundscape oriented project consisting entirely of loops, abstracted guitar and occasional drum machines, Flux has evolved in a direction that has been referred to by some as "Noise Rock Raga", with the loops functioning effectively as a tanpura and Hurleys distorted No Wave/Noise Rock oriented electric guitar still very much in the foreground but with a more calculated modal improvisational focus. Flux has also introduced chanted Nouveau Shamanic vocals (starting with Saeculum II) , exotic percussion, acoustic guitars and spoken word vocals (starting with IIIrd Ear Blind), and has featured collaborators live and in studio on occasion, though Hurley is still the only permanent member of the project.
