Five Day Hemingway were born on a wall in Edinburgh, near the nightclub. They are a four-piece band who made several important decisions near the start of their career: not to have a name beginning with 'The', not to try and imitate bands associated with a haircut or a particular cut of jeans, but to make tuneful, angular guitar-based pop. Like a lot of bands, Five Day Hemingway grew out of the open-mic scene in Edinburgh - the perfect venue to get drunk and pretend like you're not trying. Glaswegian Jamie Smith met with Stonehaven-ite Greg Sanderson, and travelled around the UK as part of an acoustic tour, penning angular acoustic tunes along the way. Having realised that acoustic guitars weren't quite enough, they decided to expand their sound. Like Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, they plugged into amplifiers amongst the stale smoke of Colorsound practice studios (6 an hour) in 2004. The line up was finalised when Jamie and Greg met Leith-born Scott Finnigan, who was to play bass, and Ross Warwick from the North West of England, who was to play drums. In the year that followed they practiced, swapped CDs, got drunk once, broke strings, and learnt how to play in time. They organised these events via the medium of mobile phone, usually with text messages, which are handy if you are out and about, and on a budget. Since then, Five Day Hemingway have played with a host of talented up and coming bands, and are now setting their sights further afield. User-contribu
