Fernando de Almeida (Lisbon, 1603/04 — Tomar, 26 April 1660) was a Portuguese Baroque composer. Fernando de Almeida was born in Lisbon in 1603 or 1604. He was the son of António Jorge, a Brigantine tailor, and Maria Lopes, a Lisboner . Both were Old Christians . He was baptized at the Church of Santa Justa in the same city. He studied Latin and music. As a master he had the famous composer Duarte Lobo when he taught at the Cathedral of Lisbon . He became a religious of the Order of Christ between 1618/19 and was initially based in the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Luz , in the current parish of Carnide , but years later he moved to the Convent of Christ.of Tomar . He managed to rise in the order, where he held, among other positions, that of visitor. In 1649 he was ordered by D. João IV to return to his homeland, returning to Carnide . The king's predilection for his music was known, [ 2 ] a fact that did not, however, prevent it from having a sad end. On March 12 , 1659 , he was arrested, accused of injuring the Prior of the Convent of Christ. He was subjected to an interrogation where he provided some data about his biography that have come to the present in a process preserved in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo . The Court of the Inquisition found him guilty and he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment , fastingbread and water, loss of status and payment of court fees. He also had to take part in the procession of the auto da fé on October 26 of the same year as
