Fereidoon Foroughi (Persian: فریدون فروغی) (January 29, 1951 - October 5, 2001) was an Iranian singer and songwriter. Fereidoon was born in Tehran, Iran. He was the fourth and last child of his family. He contributed greatly to Iranian music and arts and his unique voice and style soon caught on with the people. In addition to his studies in acting, playing the guitar, piano and organ. He also composed music. His style was inspired by jazz and blues. He started to sing in the cafeterias of Tehran in 1968 and in 1972 he recorded his first song called Adamak for a movie with same name directed by "Khosro Haritash". This track was done by Touraj Shabankhani and the vocals were by Foroughi. After that, he became more popular by releasing albums such as Tangna, Zendoone Del and Yaran. Foroughi is best known for his songs Neyaz and Yare Dabestani, which in the 1970s was sung by revolutionary students and ironically, is now sung against the same revolutionary government some 30 years later by students. This is a popular song in Iran, especially among the students movement, and is often recited in gathering and demonstrations. After the revolution 1979 and the subsequent ban on Pop music, he tried to work again and held two concerts on Kish Island South of Iran.
