Fates Warning is an American progressive metal band formed in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1982 by vocalist John Arch, guitarists Jim Matheos and Victor Arduini, bassist Joe DiBiase, and drummer Steve Zimmerman. Over their more than four-decade career, the band has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Matheos remaining the only constant member. As of 2020, the band consists of Matheos, vocalist Ray Alder (who replaced Arch in 1987), bassist Joey Vera (who replaced DiBiase in 1996), drummer Bobby Jarzombek, and guitarist Michael Abdow. The band also experienced a revolving roster of drummers and guitarists prior to Jarzombek and Abdow joining in 2007 and 2017, respectively. Recognised as a pioneer of progressive metal, Fates Warning is considered one of the "Big Three" of the genre, alongside Queensrÿche and Dream Theater, contributing to the creation and popularisation of the style. Their early work, influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal, is also regarded as significant in the development of American power metal. Fates Warning have released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, one compilation album, three DVDs featuring live concerts, one VHS cassette, and four demo tapes.
