F.R.I.C.S. is a Soopa initiative. F.R.I.C.S. stands for "Fanfarra Recreativa e Improvisada Colher de Sopa", which roughly translates as "Soup Spoon Recreational and Improvised Fanfare". It is the gathering place for some of the most obscure celebrities of Porto's underground scene, joining musicians with backgrounds as diversified as jazz, rock, classical indian music, salsa, death metal and symphonic music. Sharing the noisy, festive and communal spirit of our childhood's Brass Bands, each performance by F.R.I.C.S. combines an ihnerent psychedelic spirit (in the original sense of "mind expanding") with a celebration of the more anarchic, imaginative and uncompromised aspects of our popular culture. The ensemble is conducted by a Tele-Conductor, in video format, which structures and leads the collective's improvisations. This form of conducted improvisation, tested in several environments— concert halls, art galleries and open air venues— has been described by F.R.I.C.S. as a "metaphor for post-modernity: a group of people stares at a TV screen, convinced that they are free, because they can improvise... as long as they follow the instructions on screen". The colective has a core of 8 musicians (wind and brass, strings, keyboards, percussion and analogue synth) and regularly features invited guests. The project was founded in late 2006, in Porto, Portugal, and has a CD-R released by Soopa Server (Abraço Vivo). Presently they're committed to a tour by the 18 major cities i
