ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE is (and always was) a vehicle for the psychedelic musical experiments of ROD GOODWAY. Begun in 1988, the debut album was recorded in its entirety by Goodway ( under the working title "Holy Smoke" ) but had various instruments including Sitar, Piano, and full drum kit added in the studio by NICK SALOMAN as it was being Mastered prior to its release on the WORONZOW label ( WOO 12 ) in 1990. It was Saloman's idea to call it "Ethereal Counterbalance" (the name eventually stuck) and it remains a collectors item in this form as this version has only ever been released as a vinyl LP. ( The original "Holy Smoke" version was released in 2002 as a CDr on Goodway's Uncle Glitch label .) The second album, "Ethereal Counterbalance 2" , was eventually fully titled "Mellifluous Confluence" and released on the September Gurls label in Germany ( SGLP 15 and SGCD 11 ) in 1994. By this time there was a LIVE band featuring Phil (HEADSMITH) Smith on lead guitar and Dan Tilbury (drums), with a succession of bass players, including Tony Orchard and Steve Chew. This line-up dedicated a track called "Let It Fly" to the "SUCCOUR" 2CD 'Terrascope Benefit Album' (POT CD 01 ) The Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine editor PHIL McMULLEN went on to become head-honcho of the renowned TERRASTOCK Festivals in the USA which later included the Ethereal Counterbalance LIVE band in Boston and Seattle.
