Étienne Lemoyne (or Estienne Le Moyne) was a French Baroque composer and theorbist who was theorbist in the Musique de la Chambre du Roi from 1680 to 1723, mainly during the reign of Louis XIV . In 1680, Charles Le Camus sold to Étienne Lemoyne the position that his father Sébastien Le Camus (c.1610 - 1677) held within the Music of the King's Chamber . Although a lutenist, Étienne Lemoyne obtains the position of "above viol of the Chamber" which was that of Sébastien Le Camus but, at the Court of France at that time, it is not uncommon for the function fulfilled by the musician not to does not correspond to the charge he holds, for example for the charges of viol and lute because lutenists and violists were often able to play both instruments . But, still in 1680, the king granted his new violist the two positions of violist and lutenist "to possess them jointly under the title of tuorbe player" . Lemoyne thus held the position of theorbist within the Music of the King's Chamber from 1680 to 1723. François Rebel succeeded him in 1723.
