“This feels like the other side of winter for me”… And what a start to the spring. Just a year ago, Esther Alexander – writer and singer of songs about life, love, the stars and the sea – was introduced to Grammy-winning producer Kipper, of Sting fame. Esther recalls: “It was a scary day – just because everything inside me hoped that something might come of this first meeting, but it almost felt impossible to dream.” It was to her delight, then, that Esther and Kipper wrote their first song together on that very day – “Safe House”, which is featured on her new albumette. Rewind a little, and it soon becomes clear that Esther Alexander is no stranger to the world of music. As a session singer, she has performed and recorded with the likes of Steve Winwood, Ruby Turner and the London Community Gospel Choir. Esther also featured on the Café del Mar 25th anniversary album, co-writing and performing “Stop the World” with “Elcho” and also on the song “Snowbird” with “The Light of Aidan”. Growing up Esther was exposed to a variety of music: “My mum was totally into her rock ‘n’ roll, so Bill Haley and the Comets would be on full volume. She also loved Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. My dad was the classical boff – so he’d want to play Elgar and Rachmaninov. I got a bit of a mix.” As Esther grew up her interest was fired by the likes of U2, the Carpenters, Suzanne Vega and Sheryl Crow and she began dabbling in songwriting in her teens.
