Artist
Esprit-Philippe Chédeville, known as Chédeville l’aîné (2 September 1696 – 9 March 1762), was a French musette de cour virtuoso, composer, and instrument maker, born at Oulins and active primarily in Paris. Emerging from the extended Chédeville–Hotteterre family network of professional wind players, he entered the institutional musical world early: modern summaries state that in 1709, while still a teenager, he was admitted as a musician to the orchestre of the Paris Opéra, and that in 1723 he received (by transfer) a courtly post associated with the Hotteterre line, linking him to the elite wind-instrument establishment of the Chambre and Grande Écurie. Following the death of his brother Pierre in 1725, Esprit-Philippe is said to have transferred his own post to his younger brother Nicolas so that he could himself take up Pierre’s position—an episode that reflects how musical offices, family strategy, and professional continuity intertwined in ancien-régime Paris. Chédeville’s lasting historical importance lies in how completely he embodies the musette’s eighteenth-century salon and court ecology: he was a celebrated player, he wrote a substantial body of pieces for musette and for the closely related hurdy-gurdy (vielle à roue) with basso continuo, and he was reputedly a highly sought-after maker of musettes, producing ornate instruments advertised and traded in Paris. Reference accounts emphasise that his courtly service left him time for teaching and for composing specif
