Marcus Nepomuc Deml was born in Prague on August 9. 1967. His family emigrated from the Czech Republic to Salzburg/Austria in 1968, but moved to West Germany a year later. The Deml family lived in many german citys before finally settling in Frankfurt in 1977. Around that time Marcus started to show major interest in all kinds of music and fell in love with the sound of the electric guitar after hearing Jimi Hendrix with the “Band of Gypsies” and Deep Purple’s “Made in Japan”. At the age of 12 he finally got serious and started practicing a few hours daily. He discovered the music of Blues greats such as B.B King, Albert Collins and T-Bone Walker. He realized that the Blues was the origin of most Pop music as well as Jazz, which Marcus started to study at the age of 15, being influenced by players like the great Michael Sagmeister and George Benson. Around the same time Marcus had his first School band experiences playing material by Cream and B.B King. At the age of 16 he formed “Quest” with the amazing Moritz Eggert on keyboards, who is nowadays regarded as one of the greatest composers of modern classical music of our times. The band was influenced by the likes of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and the early works of Genesis, amongst others. By that time Marcus had also discovered Bands like the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Dixie Dregs, which made him practice a whole lot more.
