Artist
Ernst-Erich Stender (born April 11, 1944 in Tönning) is a German church musician and organist. Ernst-Erich Stender passed his A-exam at the Lübeck University of Music in 1972. From 1973 to 2009 he was organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, succeeding Walter Kraft. He is the church music director of the North Elbian Church and taught as a professor at the Lübeck University of Music. In 1976 he founded Ornament Records, a music label for recordings of organ literature and church music. His active international concert activity made him particularly well-known in Europe, North America and Japan. He is distinguished by numerous recordings, including a complete edition of the works of the Marian organist Dietrich Buxtehude, and in particular the arrangements of classical symphonies for the organ. Due to the division of labor still preserved in St. Marien between the organist and the choral singer as the responsible cantor, who was also the head of the Lübeck boys' choir, Ernst-Erich Stender was able to concentrate exclusively on playing the organ. He gave 30 to 40 concerts a year in St. Marien. In 1974 and 1985 he interpreted the entire organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He continued the tradition of the Lübeck evening music begun by Franz Tunder and Dietrich Buxtehude, which was resumed by Walter Kraft, as a series of evening organ concerts in July and August.
