Ensemble Ialoni is a women’s vocal ensemble founded in 2009 in Tbilisi, Georgia, under the direction of musicologist Nino Naneishvili. Their mission is to research, revive and popularize traditional Georgian polyphony, encompassing sacred ecclesiastical chant, regional folk songs and urban “city” music. From the start, they’ve drawn upon archival manuscripts, field recordings and expedition findings to unearth rare and complex repertoire—often pioneering performances by women of pieces historically reserved for male choirs. Since their formation, Ialoni has garnered national acclaim—winning top prizes in Georgia’s National Folklore Festival and the Tbilisi Competition of Choral Music—and toured extensively, bringing Georgia’s polyphonic heritage to audiences across Europe and beyond. Their distinctive a cappella style emphasizes the interplay of individual vocal timbres within a unified ensemble sound, creating an immersive bridge between Georgia’s musical past and contemporary world‑music stages.
