English Guitar Quartet

The English Guitar Quartet was formed in 1978 and has performed with its current lineup of Roland Gallery, Tom Dupre, Andrew Marlow, and Tim Pells since 1987. All members of the group met while students at the Royal Academy of Music in London in the early 80's, and came together for their first international tour to Australia in 1988. In addition to performing all over the UK, they have toured in Canada and Israel. The EGQ did 3 recordings with Saydisc Records between 1988 and 1993, Romantic Guitar Quartets, Baroque Guitar Quartets, and Spanish Guitar Quartets, and have performed to critical acclaim in many major concert venues. The EGQ have always used a unique combination of guitars, with a treble at A, two standard guitars, and a bass an octave down. This combination has provided an ideal platform for the group's extensive arranging, as on the Saydisc recordings, and for a wide range of modern composers who have been commissioned to write for them. Composers whose commissioned work is in the current repertoire include Martyn Brabbins, Roger Steptoe, Antonin Tucapsky, Arthur Wills, Edward Cowie, and Vincent Lindsey Clark. The EGQ are about to re-release a recording done in 1988, titled 'Suites and Dances', and containing arrangements by Dvorak, Prokofiev, Faure, and Mendelssohn.
