Empire Signal are the sound of forgotten pleasures, perfect memories. Only a few recordings are available but already the Manchester music press has labelled them with comparisons to Doves, James and U2. In a period when garage rock dominates the indie scene Empire Signal buck the trend and stand out like a beacon for doing so, a complete dedication to their art, no cut corners here. The guitar hooks are subtle but beautiful, the vocals at once both forlorn and hopeful. So often bands skimp on the chorus of their songs, arguably the most important part of the track. But there’s no fear of that here, Empire Signal know the importance of a big, epic chorus, one that could light up any stadium. Their story is one of grit and determination, musicianship honed over the years, coming to fruition in debut single Big Wide World, a track that makes you sit up and listen, a gleam of sunlight among the clouds. Modern British rock as it should be done. Empire Signal’s debut album is fast becoming the most anticipated record of 2011.
