Orchestra Carbon expands the Carbon ensemble to near-symphonic proportions with the addition of guest musicians. Different versions of the ensemble are convened for specific pieces. These include Rheo~Umbra, Serrate, SyndaKit, Quarks Swim Free, and Flexagons. Orchestra Carbon made its first full manifestation with the composition Larynx, commissioned in 1987 for the Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival. Larger instrumental forces were required for this music and the basic quintet was augmented with strings, reeds, brass, additional percussion, and players of Sharp's invented instruments.
