Artist
The Ghanaian vocalist, composer, and percussionist EKOW ALABI SAVAGE, aka EKOWMANIA, is one of the foremost living interpreters of West African rhythms on the drum set. In his 50-year-strong career, he has played with major names such as Ziggy Marley, Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor, Manu Dibango, Kojo Antwi, Cedric "Im" Brooks, Jackie Mittoo, Eek-A-Mouse, Black Heritage, Vitamin X, and Jimi Tenor. He has also released several records under his own name, including Return to Zion (2002), Going for Gold (2007), and Dr. Afrodub (2024). THE RHYTHMERS was formed by Ekowmania in Berlin in 2022, with his fellow Ghanaian veterans: Kwame Gbemu ‘Sometimer’ (Sattatree, Georgie Darko, Rob) on bass and vocals, and Frank Karikari (son of the legendary Ralph Karikari from The Noble Kings) on guitar and vocals. They were later joined by the powerful Thomas Akoto on congas. The lineup is completed by French-American guitarist and singer-songwriter Nick Morrison (The Polyversal Souls), and Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Mauricio Fleury (Bixiga 70, Gal Costa). The band continues to develop the highlife music tradition of Ghana, with its rich history of blending local rhythms with jazz, funk, and international pop. THE RHYTHMERS bring this approach into present-day Berlin, adding flavors from soukous, salsa, afrobeat, and other rhythms to a mixture of original songs and highlife classics.
