Artist
Eddy Lawrence Manson (1919-1996) was an award-winning film composer and virtuoso harmonica artist. He enjoyed worldwide recognition as a virtuoso harmonica soloist and appeared at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in New York, Gorki Park in Moscow, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles. He began performing at age 15, when he joined Borrah Minevitch's Harmonica Rascals. Later, he toured with Johnny O'Brien's Harmonica Hi-Hats, and with the USO Camp Shows (1942-45). He began scoring dramas in the days of live television, and composed for such shows as Armstrong Circle Theater, Kraft Theater, Westinghouse Theater, Studio One, and Lamp Unto My Feet. He was nominated for two Emmy awards for scores for Harvey (a Dupont Show of the Month) and for the critically-acclaimed documentary, The River Nile. His original concert works included Symphony No. 1, Fugue for Woodwinds, Ballad for Brass, Parable for 16 Horns, Yankee Doodle Toccata, and Bachiana Americana. He is also remembered for his solo harmonica work in Henry Mancini's Moon River on the album for Breakfast at Tiffany's. An honors graduate of the Julliard School of Music in New York and of NYU School of Radio-TV, Mr. Manson studied composition with both Vittorio Giannini and Rudy Schramm, clarinet with Jan Williams, and orchestration with Adolf Schmidt.
