Artist
Film scorer, composer, and producer for theater, dance, radio, television, and feature films. He began his career in several rock bands in the late 70s. Based in both New York and Los Angeles, his compositional technique is a unique blend of experimental-classical music and ambient acoustic sound. He has composed music for theatre, dance, performance art, sound installation, radio, television and feature film, receiving numerous compositional awards and fellowships in the U.S. (NYSCA, NYFA, NEA, Meet The Composer) and Europe (ORF, Vienna). Studying woodwinds and composition in his earlier private education, he went on to form the rock band The Necessaries, discovered and produced by Velvet Underground alumnus John Cale. He later went on to form The Industrial Orchestra, a 15 piece ensemble consisting of computer controlled robotic electric guitars and live musicians, performing large scale anthemic concerts in museum and theatre spaces throughout the U.S. Another aspect of Ed Tomney's work in acoustic art involves spoken-word fragments and multi-linguistic sound collage used as musical components in his scores and broadcast material. A main signature of his work in composition is this combination of musical/sound idioms and imaginative blends of Eastern and Western musics.
