Rafel Conde Santiago, best known as "El Titi", was born in Málaga (Spain), probably on 10 September 1939. He moved to Valencia when he was young together with a theatrical company and never again had he left that city. He considered himself to be Valencian and soon became famous among all the theatres, clubs and pubs in Valencia. He never hide his homosexuality although it was a very difficult time in Spain regarding gay rights because of Franco's regime. His performances were very colourful, he used to wear very flamboyant jaquets. He sang "copla", a Spanish style of music made famous by other great artits such as Concha Piquer or Rocío Jurado. Many of his songs contained a political message regarding the right of gay people to live their own lives without justification. However, his high sense of humour allowed him to make it in a different way. He was happy performing, you could notice that. Stage was his natural place to be. Probably, two of his best known songs are "Libérate" which means "Break free" and "Colorines" which means (more or less) "The Colourish man". "Libérate" is a claim of freedom for gay people, he recomends them to break free and live their lives without giving importance to what others might think of them. But he does it in a very funny way. The other one, "Colorines", describes the way his clothes are; with bright colours. He admits that everyone in the neighbourhood critizises him but does not give a damn.
