Dutar is a Hungarian world music ensemble founded and formed by singer/textile artist Renata Csoke and teacher Peter Kopeczky. Before joining forces and talent with Peter, Renata had already been involved in a project dealing with Hungarian traditional folk music called "Új Élő Népzene". She has worked as a textile artist and as a teacher of art and history of art. Péter also works as a teacher, and music is an integral part of his life, just as it is for Reni. Forming Dutar has brought new opportunities to both musicians. With Peter's wide range of instrumental and scoring skills and Reni's voice which is rich both in tone and in emotions, Dutar performs its own renditions of traditional Hungarian melodies, Gypsy (Roma) folk songs and poems by modern and well-known Hungarian poets. Based on the different formations Dutar performs in (duet, trio, quartet, quintet), Reni's distinctive singing character and the strong folk influences - mainly from Reni's heritage - it could be said that Dutar is a group that performs only Roma and Hungarian songs in the traditional way, however, Dutar is more than that: it's a journey without musical borders (involving both folk-specific instruments like the udu or the saz and universal ones like the bass or the most important one: human voice) with a versatile message and a bunch of feelings much more global and general than to be linked to a definite culture.
