A collaboration between Duke Ellington and bassist Jimmy Blanton Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was a US composer, pianist and bandleader of jazz-orchestras. His career spanned over 50 years, leading his orchestra from 1923 until death. Jimmie Blanton (October 5, 1918 – July 30, 1942) was an influential American jazz double bassist. Blanton is credited with being the originator of more complex pizzicato and arco bass solos in a jazz context than previous bassists.
