Artist
After releasing his first two albums, the self-titled Doyle Bramhall II album (1996), and its follow-up Jellycream (1999), guitarist and vocalist Doyle Bramhall II started working with his new backing band, Smokestack in the early 2000s. Their first release, Welcome (2001), was released on RCA Records and featured the single "Green Light Girl", which reached #33 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in June 2001. The band promoted the album on tour in 2001, opening for Eric Clapton, whom Doyle Bramhall II had worked with previously; in collaborations on Clapton's 2001 release Reptile and Clapton's 2000 release with B.B. King on the album Riding with the King. Joining Doyle in Smokestack is J.J. Johnson on drums and bassist Chris Bruce. Susannah Melvoin contributed background vocals, Benmont Tench pulled keyboard duty and Craig Ross played second guitar. In 2017, Doyle Bramhall II released an EP of additional tracks from the recording session for "Welcome", titled The Welcome Sessions. These seven tracks were also featured on a deluxe edition 2-CD reissue of the band's original album. "Welcome (Deluxe Edition)" was released in 2019.
