Named after a Fjordland in New Zealand, Doubtful Sound is the moniker for guitar and mandolin player Michael Thigpen. Michael began a solo career playing under the name Doubtful Sound in 2009 to find out what folk music is. Since then he has written quiet songs he has played very loudly and loud songs he has played very quietly. He has written a songs about life, love, travel, science, God, and a sweater. He has fallen in love with musical stylings of Skiffle, Delta Blues, Soul, early Country, Bluegrass, Brit-Pop and Post-Rock. Particularly he fell in love with contemporary folk stylings such as those of Frightened Rabbit, Johnny Flynn and Bon Iver. A band called Doubtful Sound was formed with Michael and his friends and that band was later broken up, leaving Michael just as he was, a musician doing what he loves, regardless of any type of support. His very first release is a four track EP entitled A Doubtful Sounding EP Volume I. To date he has toured nationally up to the Northwest United States hitting in the summer of 2010, and internationally, setting out in the summer of 2011 with his mandolin on a ten show tour of the United Kingdom. Thus far he has performed in five states and five countries. He still doesn’t know what folk music is.
