Inspired by the progressive metal sound of the 90s, Kianoosh Naghavi (guitars) upon meeting his soon-to-be bandmate, Dara Teymourifar (drums), formed the band in Tehran in the summer of 2010. The two began the early jam sessions with Shahab Arfaei Moghadam (guitars) Amirreza Madadzadeh (bass - Sang Band) and Keyhan Abbasian (vocals) as the original members. With Aria Mohtadi Haghighi joining as keyboard player in 2011, the band's musical direction shifted towards what Naghavi had originally envisioned. Shortly after, Mackan Ashkevari (Winterise) joined as lead singer. Dotem went through several lineup changes in the first few months, during which the band worked with musicians such as Mahyar Masoudi, Pouya Sabbagh, Faraz Jabbari (5grs), Aryo Barzan Abdali (Banafsh) and Kaveh Vaziri (who also came up with the band's name). The writing for the album was almost over when Mohtadi Haghighi left the band due to personal reasons. He was then replaced by Parham Khalili Pir on keyboards. Around the same time Hamid Sadeghpour joined as bass player, prompting the band to focus on other projects. The new lineup released their first single as Dotem in November 2012; a cover version of Metallica's "The Unnamed Feeling" as part of the Iranian tribute album Blackened. Later in 2013 the band parted ways with Khalili Pir. Following the development, Mohtadi Haghighi rejoined as keyboard player and Dotem resumed the writing sessions.
