November 1982 DONNA WASHINGTON The gospel tradition has allowed for the germination of many a successful pop vocalist. Donna Washington, with her third release on Capitol Records, Just For You (November 1982), proves once again what spiritual roots can do for secular sound. Born in Los Angeles just twenty-three years ago to a minister who sang and played both guitar and piano.. At the age of three, Donna began singing with her older sister, Ineta. Although performances were restricted to church-oriented affairs, Donna idolized the R&B sounds of Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin. Without the luxury of professional vocal training, Donna continued to sing profusely with the encouragement of grade school teachers who thought her vocal abilities a "miracle." "They used to marvel," Donna recalls, "at my natural inclination to use vibrato when I didn't even know what the word meant!" In 1978, Donna recorded five lead vocal tracks for the James Cleveland's Academy Cathedral LP. At the tender age of eighteen, she was signed to the Capitol label after recording demo tapes "just for the fun of it." As Donna describes that time in her life, "I wasn't even trying to land a recording contract. I just loved to sing." For Donna, each of her albums is truly a later of love and Just For You is no exception. She has worked closely with producer Chuck Jackson and assistant producer Tony Coleman for many years.
