From 2001 to 2003 the South Bend, Indiana music scene was assaulted in the most unusual and euphoric way. From the ashes of a few different local bands (Blue Owl Circus, Slater, and The Ninjas) rose the ugly and raw yet oddly mesmerizing and funky bastard step child of the South Bend punk scene: Don’t Shoot … I’m With God. Not content to follow the nearly religious laws of traditional punk rock the members of D.S.I.W.G. (Nate Trimboli, Dusty “Dontshoot” Philipson, Paul Velner, & Mark Onyx) forged their own path and left many stunned and wondering what the heck they just witnessed. With a live show that included multi-media elements, weird interpretive dancing and harrowing emotional gusto, to see the band play live was an experience all of its own. The band’s sound was a hodge-podge of influences: funk infused bass riffs; death metal screeching and nonsensical chanting; progressive drumbeats; weird tape loops and key board noodling… all this with out a single five-string guitar in sight! The band was only together for a short time before their untimely demise in 2003, but the haunting yet joyous legacy they left behind is undeniable. R.I.P.
