Artist
Don and Earl were a white gospel duo based in Knoxville, Tennessee, who gained national recognition during the 1960s through broadcasts, including on WWVA, a station from Wheeling, West Virginia. Don (Ladonuel Williams, born 1924-06-18 in Briceville, TN) and Earl Mays (born 1935-05-14 in Knoxville) partnered in 1950 and performed together until Don's death in 1985. They toured, sang in churches, and operated a sound studio in Knoxville, recording tapes for numerous groups. Their radio shows were produced at XERF in Del Rio, Texas, a "border blaster" station broadcasting from Mexico. They also had shows originating in Waterloo, Iowa, and Cincinnati, Ohio. During the 1960s, they launched Gospel Light Records and the Don and Earl Record Company from their Knoxville studio, where they produced and sold their LPs. As of May 2005, Earl Mays continues to market cassettes privately from the same Knoxville post office box he and Don used from the 1960s.
