Artist
Disco Daddy is the father of old school west coast hip-hop. He started as a West-Coast DJ and party promoter in Los Angeles area in 1976-1979. Having been a DJ for those years and having subsequently built up his M.C. name, "Disco Daddy," he began to reform his calls to the audience about zodiac signs into zodiac raps during the 'breaks' in his shows (1979). In an interview in 2008, Disco Daddy says he was inspired by the success of Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight. Later, at Magic Johnson's birthday in 1980, Disco Daddy met a new rap artist soon to go by Captain Rapp. Shortly thereafter, Duffy Hooks III and Rappers Rapp Disco Co. released The Gigolo Rapp in 1981 which featured the new duo Disco Daddy & Captain Rapp. While Kool Moe Dee and The Treacherous Three were busy roasting the old-school Busy Bee Starski in late 81', Disco Daddy was holding his own against new-school DJ Tracy (the future Ice T) in battles hosted by Unique Dreams Entertainment (later to become the hip-hop crew Uncle Jamm's Army). Battles, breaking, and graffiti were taking the west coast by storm, and Disco Daddy was at the forefront of the burgeoning recording, promoting, and electro hop and rap movements taking hold in Los Angeles. (It should also be noted that Disco Daddy's college roommate was Magic Mike from the L.A. radio station KJLH.)
