Dimitris Atraidis was born in 1900 in Kasamba, a town near Smirni. All members of his family were farmers, he actually was a farmer too until the 1922. The very same year he begun to sing and became famous. Later he was a member of a resistance as a partisan. In 1923 he settled down in Athens where he married Evangelia. In 1924 he learned to play a musical instrument santouri and later in 1930 the learned to play the guitar. He never went to school although he learned how to read and write by himself.
