Artist
Denis Levaillant is a French composer born in Paris in 1952. He is also a versatile pianist, specializing both in contemporary music and improvisation. His partners have included Pierre Rigaud, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Didier Levallet, Mino Cinelu, Jean-Louis Chautemps, Pierre Favre, Tony Coe, Kenny Wheeler, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Michel Portal, Barry Altschul and Barre Phillips... It deepens the possibilities of digital sound processing at GRM. He collaborates in numerous dance shows (Dominique Bagouet, Dominique Petit, Stéphanie Aubin, Brigitte Lefèvre), theatre (Alain Françon) and circus, and more generally develops his personal vision of the performing arts, mixing with light and musicians from diverse cultures all the previous elements. He obtained a master's degree in philosophy (1974), the Prix Italia (international prize for radio creation, 1988), a residency at the Villa Médicis hors les murs (1983, New York). He is one of the very rare creators of today to synthesize in his art so many genres often considered as antagonistic: composition/improvisation, classical/jazz, savant/popular, acoustic/electro, tonal/atonal, concert/show. His main research remains that of expression, conceived in a dramaturgical form. It can go through instrumental virtuosity or writing, but also through a search for the unheard-of or strange, without any particular prohibition.
