Deep Forest blends its signature sound with Indian folk compositions by Rahul Sharma. The pair will tour India, says Shana M Verghis Both men have been busy travelling with various concerts. However, Eric Mouqet, the French musician famous as the name behind the group Deep Forest and santoor player, Rahul Sharma, have been working across Skype, for a collaborative album on the Sony Music Entertainment label called Deep India. Mouquet who operates out of a studio, “in a small French village with 100 people, bordering a field and an actual forest,” is arranging Deep India, based on compositions by Sharma. The latter created eight fresh tracks featuring Indian folk numbers. “Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Coorg, Maharashtra have all been included,” shared Sharma who chose vocalists and instrumentalists he has known over years, including several he met during the Ruhaniyat Festival. “So, apart from my santoor, there will be dhols playing Maharashtrian lehzim and a Punjabi sufi song. A female voice will a sing Assamese Bihu song, and there will Rajasthani gipsy voices,” explained Sharma. Having done classical and fusion, the santoor player is now turning music composer on Vivek Agnihotri’s movie, Freedom, set in the 80s, about youngsters and a philosophical idea . Soft-spoken Eric Moquet told us over the phone from France, on a cold, wintery day, that he, “came to Mumbai to record Indian music for an earlier album,” but never played here before.
