Artist
It was late 2004 when two long-time friends formed DecayNY in an effort to capture their interests and convey it through their passion. With an affinity for film and literature, Amen Almighty and Suede Jury conceptualized their lives and surroundings, translated them into lyrics, and placed it over ominous production. Suede Jury's brilliance with hard drum loops emphasized the tone as Amen's concepts took listeners through long-forgotten eras. The first official collaboration between the two was for a song titled "Rap Noir," inspired by the film concept of beginning a story at the very end. More songs were recorded and the music became even more conceptual as the two prepared to finalize their album, Churches. Liquor Stores & Funeral Homes. Songs such as "Afraid to Die," sampling the legendary Sam Cooke, "Wreckless MC," and "Nostrand Ave," highlighted their abilities to be introspective and clever without sacrificing lyrical content. In the summer of 2005, a very limited sampler was pressed to 50 CD-R's and distributed in New York-area shows. The CD featured collaborative and solo material from Amen Almighty and Suede Jury, as well as an introduction to the New York Rhyme Exchange crew. Some copies were also shipped as a bonus disc with NYRE-brethren LEX's critically-acclaimed debut album, The Vague Clarity.
