DEATH ZONE originally formed in 1981 when Dave Death went to a Damned gig and met up with Phil Dekay, Ash & Stringer. Dave had been playing in local band called K-OSS since 1977 but they had just split up, so he was on the lookout for a new band. Death & Ash had known each other for many years, And so DEATH ZONE were formed, the only problem was that Dave was the only member who could play an instrument, so before the band could do anything Dave had to teach Phil how to play bass & Ash had to teach himself how to bang drums in time with the rest of the raw punk noise! they played their first gig in a renowned Stoke on Trent venue, called The Vine' where all the touring punk bands from over the UK played, after this initial gig, Stringer left the band, so Phil Dekay took over on vocals and we asked Tessa to play bass. This line up would last until 1984. they went to Twilight Recording Studios in Manchester, and recorded their first demo; including the songs: I HATE THE PIGS/ RELIGION/ YOUTH IS TO BLAME/ and 3rd WORLD WAR; Death Zone now played lots of gigs then went back into Twilight and recorded their 2nd demo,SOMETHING'S WRONG/ NUCLEAR ARMS-RACE/ COWARDLY ASSASSIN and STREET GANGS, the song The Youth is to Blame from the 1st demo was released on CONFLICT'S , WHO WHAT WHY WHEN WHERE Compilation LP, which got the band a lot of coverage in international fanzines and also in Maximum Rock & Roll and Punk Lives Magazine.
